Boston & Beyond:

This year running Boston was extra special knowing that I was carrying precious cargo with me :) Race day weather was perfect- a little cool with light wind. The sun was out, and it did get a little warm during some parts but overall it was wonderful. I really took my time and stayed very well hydrated during the race and maintained an easy pace. I think I ended up having to stop 5 times to pee and I crossed the line in 4:37:29. I got lots of encouragement along the way since I had "Baby On Board" taped to the back of my shirt. I saw my high school friend Cristin as I made the final turn from Hereford St. onto Boylston. Cristin had scored me my race number so I was really glad I got to see her and thank her in person! I also saw Ty a little ways down from Cristin. He took the pics of me showing off my shirt. I am going to frame my race bib to hang in the baby's room and one day when the little bun is old enough I will be so excited to tell him/her the story of how we ran the marathon together :) I really hope this child will grow up to appreciate and truly enjoy exercise. Ty obviously wants the baby to play hockey, whereas I prefer figure skating :) But we both love to run, so we'll see!

The first trimester ended- my only complaint was extreme fatigue and lots of hunger. No real cravings (well maybe Lucky Charms and english muffins w/butter & peanut butter) 2nd trimester started and the extreme fatigue eventually went away and was replaced with constant, dull headaches. Work has been very stressful and continues to be very stressful. I started seeing a chiropractor which has helped my headaches tremendously. As for stress management...I still struggle with this. I have tried to work very hard at taking time for myself to do some yoga and stretching at night, but I am not as consistent with doing this as I would like. For the past 2 weeks I have averaged 55 hr work weeks. The lung transplant program has really grown and our volume has increased and we do not have enough staff at the moment to support the growth. It will hopefully be getting better as we are close to hiring some more staff. It will take some time to get the new staff up and running though and I may be on maternity leave by the time that happens! At best I am only able to fit a run into my schedule 2 x week (usually on the weekends). Running is also not exactly what I would call it- it's more of a dare I say "jog" (cringe) I hate that word, "jog." This growing belly of mine is definitely getting in the way and I pretty much feel like I have to pee during the entire "run."

The cool thing about the growing belly though is the fact that there is something moving inside it! I am now almost 23 weeks and have been feeling movement since about the 20th week. I never experienced "gas bubbles" or "questionable movements" like I read about or have heard about. The first time I felt it move I knew right away -it was a very distinct "quickening" movement. Ty has been able to feel the movement for a little over a week now. I can't wait until we can see body parts moving about :) We went to the OB today and he put Ty to work with the doppler. It was very cute. I was amazed also that the OB could feel the baby's body parts. As of this afternoon the baby's head was down at the bottom of my uterus, the butt was pointed to the right of my belly and the legs were to the left. I have been watching some natural births on the internet and been doing some visualization to help prepare for hopefully a natural birth. The doulas are wonderful and I really can't imagine going through this without their knowledge and support. I really do feel like I am "training" for birth - much like training for an Ironman. I am hoping labor won't last longer than Ironman Couer D'Alene which is the longest time it has taken me to do an IM (about 16.5 hrs) But I realize it may be longer since this is my first birth. I also realize that a natural birth may not be possible, but I would like to give it 110% and am confident that my body will know what to do when it is time.

Not much else is new. It's very hot down here. Ty & I were up on the Cape in early July for about 10 days and that was a really nice break. We had planned on flying up there, but ended up driving b/c I screwed up our flights. My placenta brain booked our flights backwards and it was going to cost about $800 to fix. We did not catch my mistake until about midnight so we hopped in the car at 1 am and drove through the night to Beverly, MA. My friend Lisa was getting married and I was her co maid of honor so we really had to get up there on time! We were able to laugh about it, but initially I did cry knowing that I screwed up the flights and we would have to drive all night long! We made great time though :) Will was up there as well, and we all went out on the boat twice and got to see alot of the Cape Crew. Ty & I also ran almost everyday. It was very enjoyable. This past weekend Will, Ty, & I went to Wrightsville Beach for a surfing event put on by "Life Rolls On" Check out Will's blog for pics & stories: http://willarchibald.blogspot.com
