It's Turkey Trot time...
Well it is that time of year again. Although Thanksgiving is this coming week, it seems like Christmas is rapidly approaching. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that 2 radio stations in our area started playing Christmas tunes 24/7 two weeks ago :) We are in pseudo Christmas mode, but kicked off Thanksgiving week with a good ol' Turkey Trot race in Pinehurst. We ran this race in 2005 just a few weeks after we met and returned to the start line this year a little more fit and competitive. We opted to race alone for the 13.1 miles, as I was not expecting great things since coming off IM FL 2 weeks ago and Ty wanted to see how well he could do having not "trained" for the distance. Both Saturday and today have been beautiful fall days down here, a bit chilly in the AM, but sunny and mild for the afternoon. Ty had a great race, no major issues for him and he finished 6th in his age group with a time of 1:38:37 (20th place overall out of 91) I had an ok run, pushed the pace as long as I could, but really fatigued at mile 9 and also had a small GI issue (thank goodness for Porta Potties :) I finished 3rd in my age group with a time of 1:53:07, good for 14th overall out of 60. I won a little drawstring backpack- so exciting ;)

As much as I dread the cooler weather, once it gets here it's not so bad. I love coming to Pinehurst for many reasons. My soon-to-be in laws live here, and I find their home very cozy and relaxing, much like my parents home in Chatham. The town itself also reminds me of Chatham, quiet and quaint, yet the golf resort and village also offers an upscale feel to it. It's a great place to run, lots of quiet neighborhood streets. They have some wonderful places to eat, they even have sushi! I look forward to coming down here, no matter what time of year it is. After our race yesterday, Ty and I had a quick bite of sushi and a beer and then went to visit his grandfather who is in the hospital. After our visit we took a stroll down Broad St. in the neighboring town called Southern Pines. Broad St. is also very quaint, lots of independent gift shops. We headed back to his folks house and concocted some adult cider. We headed over to a nearby outdoor roller rink to watch a family friend's son's hockey game. He is 5 and it was fun to watch him play as we sipped our hot adult beverage in the chilly evening air. Ty, Joyce, and I then had one of the yummiest burgers on earth at a really cool place called Ashten's. I think I made it home to watch about 25 minutes of Forrest Gump on tv and I was in bed by 9:30. We enjoyed the usual Sunday breakfast of eggs and a bloody mary and did the 20 question quiz that comes in the Sunday paper. The Johnsons' headed out to play a round of golf which leaves me here to blog/online Christmas shop/wedding plan. I am headed over to visit a patient's mom later this afternoon. I took care of her son lot, and he passed in July while waiting for a heart transplant. He went on to give the gift of life and donated one of his organs. His family happens to live just around the corner from Ty's folks. Let this be a reminder to us all as Thanksgiving approaches to be thankful for our health.
