Oct 5 7 pm

Great day today- played triathlete this morning and then tourist this afternoon. Swam for an hour and then hung out on the sea wall for a bit. Met up with Mark Haffner after the swim. I used to work with him at Boston Medical Center. He is a PA and his wife Joni is quite an accomplished triathlete who has qualified for Kona 5 times. It was great to see a familiar face amidst all the intimidating elite athletes. After the swim, Ty and I went to Bike Works to pick-up Black Betty. Saw Sarah Reinerstan and Joanna Zeiger. Sarah is a big profile physically challenged athlete. She has been on a few tv commercials and is a poster child for IM handicap athletes. (She is an above the knee amputee) Joanna Zeiger is a female pro who won IM Coeur D'Alene when I raced there in 2006. After some lunch at the house, all 7 of us piled into the SUV and drove out toHawi via the Queen K. This route is the majority of the bike course. It definitely made me nervous driving out there because there are a lot of significant climbs- oi vay! It was crazy though to drive through the lava fields- amazing! All along the way, people have used white coral to make designs and spell out messages or names- it is truly artwork. Even though the bike is going to be hard as hell, I am going to try and enjoy the scenery. After going through the very small town of Hawi we made our way to an AMAZING lookout point at Pololu Valley. We felt like we were on an episode of "Lost." It was GORGEOUS to say the least. On the way back we enjoyed some Kona coffee ice cream which was a welcome treat! Tomorrow I will register and get some bike time in out on the Queen K to "experience" the wind. Then we are going to a lua'u for dinner! Thursday we are hitting the road for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and possibly a trip to Hilo.
